A word of warning:
A few years ago, during a long hot summer, my family and I embarked on a tour of Italy. We were currently in Florence, on the final stages of a wonderful trip. Mum was meeting us at the end of the tour in Venice. The plan was to meet up with her the next day at the hotel.
After a rocky start with a flight delay and a water-taxi mix-up, Mum was super excited to finally be in Venice. She quickly found her way to our hotel, freshened up, and headed out for dinner. Sitting in one of the charming little side streets, basking in the warmth of the sun, a glass of red wine in hand, and savouring some delicious Italian cuisine, she later told us she felt like she was in heaven.
However, her heavenly experience took an unexpected turn when she decided to head back to the hotel. As she retraced her steps, with the sun starting to set, she wandered down a few narrow alleyways, and crossed over a few cute bridges, she suddenly found herself not recognizing any of her surroundings! This is the story of how Mum became horribly lost in Venice, all alone. At night! Yikes!!

Hopelessly lost:
After several twists and turns, and wandering around for a while, she stumbled upon St. Mark’s Square, where she spotted a couple of friendly police officers. They were more than willing to assist but were stumped when Mum could only describe her hotel location as being “by a canal, with a bridge near it.” Well, that could describe just about any place in Venice!
In the meantime, we’d spent the final night of our tour just a few hours away in Florence. In the early hours of the morning, while we were in bed, my husband Zac heard my phone ring. It was 2:00 AM. He, expressing his concern, said that my Mum might be in trouble. She was with the police and was completely lost. Mum ended up meandering the streets for a good four hours, unable to locate the elusive hotel. During this time, she sent multiple urgent text messages to Zac and me, pleading for a callback.
Luckily, Zac awoke from his slumber just as I was in dreamland. I called Mum right away, and as soon as she picked up, she exclaimed in a panic, “Lindsay! Lindsay! I’m lost! I’ve been with the police for four hours!” My heart went out to her. Anyone would feel distressed in that situation. Zac and I once found ourselves in a similar predicament in Barcelona, aimlessly wandering the unfamiliar streets for hours, searching for our hotel. It can be quite unnerving when you’re in a foreign country, don’t speak the language, and have no idea where you are!

The kindness of strangers
After giving Mum the name and location of the hotel, I learned that a kind-hearted stranger had come to her aid. He couldn’t bear to see her wandering the streets of Venice alone and offered assistance. I spoke to him over the phone, provided him with the hotel’s address, and he graciously escorted Mum right to the front door. He even waited outside to ensure she safely made it inside. It was truly heartwarming to witness such acts of kindness from strangers. Sometimes, when you’re abroad, that’s all you have. I really wish I knew who this compassionate gentleman was; he certainly deserves a medal for his goodwill.
I jokingly told Mum that she was under strict orders not to leave the hotel until we arrived later that afternoon – LOL! In all seriousness, I didn’t want her to risk getting lost again. To be fair, she was too apprehensive to venture out on her own. The moral of the story here, folks, is to never leave your accommodations without having the full address of your hotel and their phone number on your person, just in case you find yourself in a similar situation.
We have arrived
However, when we got to our lodging, which was the delightful Hotel Vilo Del Orlo, just a stone’s throw from St. Mark’s Square – an unbeatable location, while we were checking in, I inquired with the receptionist about my Mum’s whereabouts. “She’s already left,” she replied. I was taken aback and a bit panicked. What if she got lost again? Had she written down the name of the hotel this time? How were we going to locate her? But it was a false alarm; she was waiting in her hotel room next to us, for us to arrive. Panic over!
