WHY I CAN’T WAIT TO GO BACK TO WARNER BRO’S. MOVIE WORLD ON AUSTRALIA’S GOLD COAST!

If you’re holidaying at Australia’s world-famous Gold Coast, Southern Queensland, then you should know your trip wouldn’t be complete without visiting the biggest and best theme park: Warner Bros. Movie World.  A place where you can enjoy rubbing shoulders with your favourite superheroes (or supervillains) of the DC Universe, as well as ride some of the fastest and tallest roller coasters in the Southern Hemisphere. It really is a great day out!

I’d been looking forward to visiting Warner Bro’s. Movie World on Australia’s Gold Coast for the longest time, so when my family and I recently took a trip to the Gold Coast, this park was at the very top of our bucket list. However, a week before we were due to go, I caught covid – doh! Luckily, after spending a week in bed, I finally tested negative the night before we went. So even though I was able to head out to the park, after being ill with covid I was as weak as a kitten and was unable to get myself to go on any rides (Hey, it’s an excuse to go back someday, right?). So, instead, I soaked up the atmosphere, watched some shows, and did some shopping, and despite this much more laid-back approach, I still had a great day out. So, strap yourselves in while I take you on a wild (but not TOO wild) ride around the park.  

Why Visit?

If you’re a fan of famous movie and TV characters, like Batman, Harley Quinn, Bugs Bunny, and Tweety Pie – just to name a few, then Warner Bros. Movie World is a great place to visit. Think Disney World on a less grand and slightly smaller scale; you’re almost there.

Tickets

When you arrive, you’ll need to immediately redeem your tickets upon entrance, and although they can be bought at the park gate, we pre-purchased a Village Roadshow Pass, which included entry to three out of the five parks (buyers’ choice). This was the third and final park we used on our Pass. 

Once you’ve redeemed your tickets, you can head on into the park. You’ll first have to walk along the green and purple carpet and get the obligatory selfie in front of Warner Brothers Grand Archway before you head on into the action. However, you’ll need to be patient to get the best shot as about 10 million other people will be behind you, waiting to do the same, or just blatantly walking into your shot. But it’s the law, and it must be done.

The first thing you’ll spot is a huge roller coaster called The Superman Escape. Normal-non-sick-Lindsay would have been all over this ride, despite the long queue, but not today. Weak-post-covid-recovering-Lindsay was just happy to walk around and take it all in. There’s also a fun-looking fountain near here called The Fountain of Fame, which was spewing out some kind of green water that looked a bit like radioactive waste. An oil barrel in the middle of the fountain with a picture of The Joker on it gave you an indication as to who was behind turning the water green.

Main Street

After coming out of the store I immediately started to feel faint. It was obviously a mixture of being hot due to the heat, and still feeling ill post-Covid, so I knew I had to hydrate, and fast! Luckily there was no shortage of places to eat and drink. We were just around the corner from Main Street, which has heaps of shops, a Cinema, and of course, plenty of eateries. I headed straight to a place called Sweet Treats, which was completely empty. I bought a large vanilla milkshake which made me feel heaps better. I’d love to have tried some of the decadent treats or even some of the flavours of ice cream, but sadly, I’d gone right off my food since having covid. When we left the park later that afternoon, the queue for Sweet Treats was out the door. I’m not surprised considering how delicious my milkshake was!

Now that I knew I wasn’t going to collapse into a heap, I started to take in more of my surroundings on Main Street. It really is a cool spot, filled with Art Deco/Hollywood-style fronted structures, with American and Australian flags draped from the buildings. Also, it’s completely undercover too which is great if it rains, as well as offering protection from the ever-present Brisbane sun.

Stunt Show

At the very end of Main Street, there’s a Bank-Type-looking building that was apparently going to be ‘robbed’ by some bad guys in an hour, and Wonder Woman was going to come and save the day. In the meantime, we decided to watch The Hollywood Stunt Driver 2 show. It was really fun, and we had pretty good seats too – right in the front row! Though take my advice, it’s best to sit at least 3-4 rows back so that you’re a little higher off the ground, as right in front of us was an eye-level metal safety bar that slightly obstructed our view. I would recommend getting here at least 20-30 minutes before the show starts as the arena fills up really quickly…this meant we didn’t have a chance to move seats.  Don’t worry about being bored while you’re waiting for the show to begin as the big screen and Dance Cam will keep you entertained. It’s always funny watching everyone bust a move! 

At around 12 PM, the show came roaring to life – literally! Two cars came screeching into the arena from both corners, initially looking like they were heading straight for each other, then just missing a head-on collision by a couple of inches. This all happened so fast that it took a minute to realise it was even part of the show. The cars come to a screeching halt, and the host casually pops out of one of the car’s passenger seats. She was an Aussie woman, who was very closely followed by a guy with a strong American accent, who turned out to be a “movie director”, and the show was about these two presenters pretending to film an action movie. It was really well done. They even got members of the audience to participate, which was really funny to watch. They had stuntmen who were supposed to be silly ‘cops,’ pretending to catch the “bad guys” driving the racing cars before jumping out of the way in the last seconds for that fear factor. I’d definitely recommend watching it.   

Woman Power! 

Once the show had finished, we made our way out of the arena and were just in time to see Wonder Woman save the day.  That’s right, we stood and watched as she stopped two bad guys from robbing the bank! This was played out at the end of Main Street, in front of the bank and everyone lined the street to catch a glimpse of the action. 

One of the things I would highly recommend is having your photo taken with some of the famous characters from the Warner Bros. Movies World. We had a family shot taken with the cast of Looney Tunes such as Bugs Bunny, Tweety Pie, and friends. It was great to capture such a fun day together with all of the family. 

My daughter Aria also got to pose with her favourite lady superhero Harley Quinn (and the Joker). They were really great with her, remarking that she had some really cool kicks, and the Joker even told her to ‘save those kicks for Batman!’ LOL.    

At the start of your day, I would highly recommend that you buy a refillable drink, then you can fill it up as many times as you like, and you get to keep the cup as a cool souvenir too (you do pay for the refills, but they are MUCH cheaper). You can also use it in the other parks on the super pass too, so once you’ve bought it be sure to take it to the other parks with you, as it really does work out to be a bargain!  

Kids Zone 

Next, we headed to the right and made out way over to the Kids WB Fun Zone, which has a really cool archway to welcome you in, just like the one at the front entrance. Straight in front of you is the Looney Tunes Splash Zone, a mini area for the kids to cool off. Perfect for the day we visited as it was over 30 degrees. Aria ran straight in and got a bit wet, but I wouldn’t have expected anything less. Immediately to the right, there’s a Looney Tunes Carousel, which was packed with families enjoying themselves. Another fun-looking ride I spotted in this area was the Speedy Gonzales Tijuana Taxis, which let you drive around a slow racetrack. If I wasn’t sick, I’d have loved to go on, but today that just wasn’t happening. 

By this point, I figured I didn’t have much left in the tank, so I decided to check out the rest of the park so that I could head back to the hotel. I walked back towards Main Street and took a left, where I passed some really awesome-looking places to eat. There was a replica Dirty Harry’s Bar & Grill, from the movies, and opposite was Gotham City Café – Prime Burgers, which I would love to have tried. Around the corner was the Scooby Doo Roller Coaster. It was a fun-looking Ghost Train, which I would have loved to have a go on since it reminded me of how my Gran, and I, would always ride the ghost train whenever we visited a fun fare. Maybe next time. 

The Wild West 

The last area I explored was Wild West Falls. It looks like a small American Wild West country town, where everything is made of wood, and the front of the buildings looked like saloons. The area was home to arcade games, eateries, and game stalls that bordered the Doomsday Precinct. As I continued on my way through the Precinct, I saw a guy who looked like he’d just crashed his car into a fence and climbed onto the roof. Whenever anyone walked near it, fake electricity and sparks would shoot out. This area had the most famous ride in the park, the Destroyer. Unfortunately, this was another one I had to skip as I felt “destroyed” enough already. You’ll also see plenty of DC Super-Villains around, such as members from the Suicide Squad and Harley Quinn. Crime was rampant in the area, with graffiti scrawled on a bank, and dynamite boxes scattered throughout by the Joker. 

To round off my day, I went back and watched the Wild West Falls Adventure Ride. I looked on in glee as the cart plummeted down 20 meters to the bottom of the track, completely soaking all the riders at the end. I wish it could have been me – lol! 

Plans For Next Time 

The next time I visit Warner Brothers Movie World, I guarantee that I will be fit and healthy, so I can experience the rides, try all of the yummy-looking foods, and watch all of the shows without worrying that I am going to keel over. Yet despite the fact I was still recovering from having covid, I really enjoyed myself, and now I really can’t wait to visit again in the future, and while my day was limited, it just goes to show that even if you don’t fancy going on any rides, you can still have a great day out.

At the time of writing, a ticket to the park cost $95.00 AUD per person, with free use of the virtual queue (requires you to download the app, which is also free but offers in-app purchases). You can also buy other passes to include the other parks, such as Sea World, Wet & Wild, The Outback Experience, or Paradise Country. There are a variety of tickets and passes available from basic park entry, adding on experiences, or picking the length of time you want the pass for (ranging from 3 days up to 14 days). Where are the Parks Located?

Along the Pacific Highway Oxenford, Gold Coast, Queensland, 4210. Around 30-45 minutes from the center of the Gold Coast. 

How do you get to the Parks?

Many hotels have their own shuttle bus service; however, you can get there via Uber or Con-X-ion, which is a private transfer company on the Gold Coast. For those traveling on public transport, you can catch the train to Coomera Station and then hop on the TX7 Helensvale bus service. Alternatively, you can catch any northbound tram to Helensvale station, then jump on the TX7 bus right to the parks.

What are Warner Brothers Movie World’s Opening Hours?

The park is open every day from 9.30 AM – 5 PM. There may be some closures or adjusted opening times throughout the year due to holidays and special events, so checking the website before heading there is a good idea.

Are there any Hotels at Warner Brothers Movie World?

No, but you can check out Booking.com to find your ideal hotel on the Gold Coast.

How Long Should I Stay at Movie World?

I would recommend spending at least a full day here. During my visit, I was here for around three hours and saw every area in the park, as well as watched a show. If you’re planning to go on the rides, you’ll need more time, or maybe even a couple of days, so that you don’t miss out.

Is There Anywhere To Store Your Bag?

Yes, there are coin-operated lockers available starting from around $10.00, which are located opposite the Photo Center. It’s a good idea to bring an extra change of clothes if you’re planning on going on the wet rides and store them here for when you need them.

Do You Have to Pay Extra for the Rides Once Inside?

No, once you’ve purchased your park ticket, all the rides are included in the price, as well as the shows and parades, etc. However, you will need to pay for your own food and drinks and any souvenirs while inside.  

Are the Queues Really Long? 

I went at the busiest time of the year during the Australian summer School Holidays, which run from Christmas until the end of January, and yet we found the queues pretty reasonable, despite how busy the park was. That being said, if you have little impatient kids with you, it might be a good idea to make use of the virtual queue facility or invest in a fast-track pass on the day.

As well as having loads of rides and thrill-seeking roller coasters for the adventurous ones, there’s also exciting shows to really get your heart pumping! As an added layer of fun, you have the superheroes and villains whom you might catch roaming around the park too. And for those who are not into the rides, there are also plenty of activities, and amazing shops to look at or great restaurants to sample.

My family and I had a multi-generational day out, with ages starting from 5 to 72 years old, and we all had a blast, and there was something for everyone to enjoy from the shopping to the atmosphere and watching the shows, to indulging in some yummy treats, everyone enjoyed something different.
